This course is designed to prepare individuals to assist with the planning, preparation and conduct of work practices, for the installation of water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems and appurtenances. Individuals will learn the theoretical and practical knowledge based on utility engineering design and principles necessary to give them a competitive edge when applying for positions and performing tasks in the utility engineering construction industry. This course also has a personal finance module designed to help students understand the impact on occupational goals and future earnings potential.
Upon successful completion of this course, individuals will be able to safely construct and install water, sanitary and drainage pipes, structures and appurtenances in water collection and use basic tools of the trade, set up, use and care for equipment, identify and manage hazards and risks associated with the installations including excavation and trenching, apply safe working procedures while working around heavy equipment according to the standards set forth by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), read and understand utility plans, perform basic construction math, compute grades and slopes as it relates to elevation, understand the use of structures such as manhole, catch basin and valve vaults and also understand pipe utility terminology. In addition, students will be taught the basics and importance of personal finance.
